Father François-Xavier Lafrance was born in Quebec City in 1814. Ordained at Rustico, Prince Edward Island, he later became the first priest at Tracadie, New Brunswick, where he took care of lepers.
In 1854, in Memramcook, New Brunswick, he founded St. Thomas's Seminary, the forerunner of St. Joseph's College.
