Keys to History

There continued to be very sharp divisions in Montreal's social hierarchy. The upper class of British ancestry maintained its dominant position. Having benefited handsomely from the general prosperity of the time, the members of this class led a life of luxury in their huge mansions in the Golden Square Mile or Westmount. Figures such as Cornelius Van Horne, Thomas Shaughnessy, Richard B. Angus, Vincent Meredith and Herbert Holt stood at the summit of Canada's social ladder, and their decisions directed the development of the entire country.

  • What

    R. B. Angus was associated with two of the biggest companies in Canada: the Bank of Montreal and Canadian Pacific Railway. He was general manager of the Bank and served as its president from 1910 to 1913. He was also one of the founders of Canadian Pacific and sat on its board.

  • Where

    Like many other upper-crust Montrealers, R. B. Angus was born in Scotland. He emigrated to Canada in 1857, at the age of 26. With the exception of a few stays in the United States, he spent most of the remainder of his life in Montreal.

  • When

    When this photograph was taken, R. B. Angus was already 75 years old. Two years earlier, Canadian Pacific had honoured him by naming its new railway equipment maintenance facility in east-end Montreal the Angus Shops.

  • Who

    Richard Bladworth Angus (1831-1922) was an important Montreal businessman and financier. A great collector of paintings, he served as president of the Art Association, the forerunner of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He was also involved in a number of charitable organizations.
