"I sought after trade but could not find a loom nor a Weaver in all Quebec," wrote this Scottish immigrant weaver on his arrival in that city in 1821. James Murdoch eventually acquired land in Shipton (now Richmond) bought a loom, and plied his trade as a weaver and a farmer there for almost two decades. His account book gives detailed lists of the fabrics he wove, their monetary value, his customers and the goods they bartered in return. Most importantly, it contains a number of rare coverlet patterns.
