There was no better time to be far away from Québec than January 1998. When cartoonist Aislin returned from a two-week cruise in Barbados, having missed the ice storm that had turned Quebeckers' lives upside down, his co-workers aimed a few sarcastic remarks his way.

A bad ice storm caused many transmission towers to collapse, leading to major disruption of Québec's power grid. As a result, hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were left without electricity, and Quebeckers' confidence in the authorities' ability to deal with a crisis of this magnitude was severely shaken.

In Québec, the worst-hit area was a triangle formed by the towns of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Granby and St. Hyacinthe.

The acute period of the ice storm lasted from January 5 to February 8, 1998.
