This especially lifelike and realistic Nakoda carving shows the Plains cultures' respect and admiration for horses and the pride felt by horse owners. Perhaps it commemorated a brave horse that died on the battlefield, featured in a storyteller's recreation of a battle scene or raid, or perhaps a performer simulated "mounting" it in a ceremonial dance.
