Keys to History
During WWII, a government drive to enlist volunteers in May 1941 attracted little response. This, and the invasion of the U.S.S.R. by Germany in June, raised the issue of conscription. Arthur Meighen was elected leader of the Conservative Party in November. He immediately promised to fight for compulsory conscription for overseas service. This cartoon suggests that the opponents of overseas conscription are blind to the threat posed by Hitler's expansion in Europe.
-
What
All political parties had opposed conscription in the 1940 election. The disastrous Allied defeats of 1940 and 1941 caused many Canadians to reconsider its introduction.
-
Where
This cartoon was published in the Montreal Gazette, a newspaper that supported conscription.
-
When
Hitler invaded the U.S.S.R. in June 1941. His rapid advance in the summer of 1941 raised the possibility of a Russian defeat.
-
Who
This cartoon depicts objection to conscription as the fuel that will keep Hitler going. The objector is "just Hitler's meat"!
