This photograph is of the No. 2 Battery, Officers of the 1st Brigade Field Artillery, Guelph while they were at a military camp in London, Ontario. At this point McCrae had become a Captain in the No. 2 Battery, 1st Brigade Field Artillery. He stayed with the No. 2 Battery, becoming a gunner in 1890 and Quarter-Master Sergeant in 1891, By 1893 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, in 1896 he became Lieutenant and in 1901 Captain.

The 1st Brigade Field Artillery officers in full uniform. John McCrae, standing at the far left, was promoted to Captain of the 16th Battery in 1901.

The officers were at a camp in London, Ontario, when this photo was taken. McCrae pasted this photograph in his 1900 scrapbook and wrote the names of all the Guelph officers beneath it.
