The Soldiers' Tower of Hart House in Toronto, Ontario, soaring nearly 44 metres in the air and built of stone, celebrates the lives and courage of those who could not rise from the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars.
Three tablets are inscribed with the names of 623 men (and one woman) of the University of Toronto who died in the First World War. One of the side tablets is inscribed with a passage from John Milton's Samson Agonistes, written in 1671; the other, pictured here, is inscribed with John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields.

Near the tower is a memorial screen of three tablets carved with the names of the University's war dead flanked by two additional tablets inscribed with a passage from Milton's Samson Agonistes and John McCrae's In Flanders Fields.

The memorial screen is located adjacent to Soldiers' Tower at Hart House on the campus of the University of Toronto.

When
The University of Toronto Alumni Association decided to build a tower and memorial screen. The cornerstone was laid on Armistice Day, 1919, with construction beginning early in 1923.

Who
The tower and memorial screen were designed by the Toronto architectural firm of Sproatt & Rolph who also designed Hart House.
