For Canada, the First World War began with Britain's declaration of war against Germany on August 4, 1914. The Canadians arrived in England on October 16 and began training at Salisbury Plain. The First Canadian Division arrived at the Western Front in February, 1915 and soon entered the Battle of Ypres (Belgium). The Canadians suffered 5,500 casualties over the next two weeks.
Earlier in October 1914 the Allied forces had participated in the Battle of Arras and the Battle of Albert, and were able to celebrate the shooting down of the first German aircraft on October 5th.

This is a replacement medal. The whereabouts of the original issued to John McCrae is unknown.

John McCrae was issued this medal for his service in Europe. The medal was sent home by mail to his family in Guelph, Ontario.

These medals were issued to members of the British Expeditionary Force who had served between August 5 and November 22, 1914.

John McCrae's 1914-1915 Star medal was awarded posthumously. His family did not receive it until March 23, 1923.
