Keys to History
The Boer War (1899-1902) was John McCrae's initiation to real battle. Although he returned in good physical health and much matured, he began to disapprove of the cost of war in human and animal lives.
McCrae documented his Boer War experiences from December 21, 1899 to January 12, 1901 in scrapbooks, a photo album and his sketchbook.
Returning to Guelph at midnight on January 12, 1901, McCrae's section was met by huge crowds of revellers. The crowd waited until midnight to greet their soldiers with a parade, a band and fireworks. McCrae rode in a cab with the Mayor.
When the festivities ended, he resumed his medical studies, taking up his fellowship at McGill University.
