In 1998 five French-speaking MPs from New Brunswick made their entrance into the House of Commons. They were half the MPs representing New Brunswick in Ottawa. One of them, Claudette Arsenault Bradshaw, of Moncton, was named Minister of Labour by Jean Chrétien that year. She became the first Acadian woman to hold a federal cabinet post.
Well known for her community work in the Greater Moncton area, Claudette Bradshaw is the MP for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe. In 2003 she also became minister responsible for homelessness. In 2004 Prime Minister Paul Martin made her minister of state for human resources development.
