Keys to History
After the grain had dried in the stooks, it was ready for the threshing machine. Farmers did not usually own these machines; instead they hired professional threshing crews that started in the southern Great Plains of the U.S. and worked their way north into Canada over the late summer and fall months. One of farm women's hardest chores was cooking meals for the threshing crews.
-
What
On the left is a threshing machine, driven by a leather belt attached to the tractor's power takeoff.
-
Where
The picture was taken in Alberta, but the scene was common all over the Prairies for decades.
-
When
This appears to be a gasoline-powered tractor, and since the year is 1915, it is a fairly early one.
-
Who
A four-man team shovels grain into the threshing machine, while a fifth man operates the tractor. A man in a suit -- the landowner? -- stands beside the machine, while another watches from horseback.
