Keys to History
In 1885 Senator Matthew Cochrane (1823-1903), a Montreal industrialist, began acquiring land in central Alberta. He eventually owned or leased 135,000 hectares of ranchland. The Cochrane Ranch was the largest in Canada. William F. Cochrane, the senator's son, operated the southern part of the ranch with cattle imported from Montana. The ranch was profitable, though its owners experienced many difficulties. After the senator died, the ranch was broken up and sold.
