Founded by Montreal entrepreneurs, the Montreal Cotton Company of Valleyfield was for a long time one of the biggest textile mills in Canada. In 1900, there was a violent strike involving 250 construction workers, hired to enlarge the mill, and 3000 textile workers. To re-establish order, local authorities had to call in the militia.
