The Boy Scout movement was founded in England in 1907 by Sir Robert Baden-Powell. When he realized that girls were also interested in Scouting, Baden-Powell quickly founded the Girl Guides. By 1910, both movements had become tremendously popular with youngsters in many countries, including Canada. Scouting and Guiding really took off in Montreal after the 1920s, when French-speaking, Catholic troops were established. Primarily geared to urban youth, Scouting and Guiding focus on experiential learning - or learning by doing - and introduce young city-dwellers to the challenges and adventures that can be found in nature.
