Born in Cascumpèque, Prince Edward Island, Joseph-Octave Arsenault was a pioneer of the Acadian Renaissance.
After completing his education, he became a teacher, and then, using his entrepreneurial talents, the owner of several businesses, including two general stores and a fish company.
In 1857, Joseph-Octave Arsenault launched into politics. He sat in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island and, some years later, in the Canadian Senate.
Joseph-Octave Arsenault was a tireless promoter of the advancement of the Acadian people. Among other causes, he fought for the survival of French-language education. During the First National Convention, he acted as vice-president and, in 1884, founded a chapter of the Société l'Assomption in his local parish.
