Keys to History

Born in St. Marie de Kent in 1846, Gilbert Anselme Girouard studied at St. Joseph's College in Memramcook, New Brunswick. He taught for several years before launching a career as a merchant in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, in about 1870.

He was also a member of the Conservative Party. In 1878 and again in 1882, he was elected to the provincial legislature for the riding of Kent. He left politics in 1883.

Like other leaders of the Acadian Renaissance, Gilbert Anselme Girouard was a great defender of French-language education. He was also one of the main organizers of the First National Convention of 1881.

Gilbert Anselme Girouard died in 1885, at the age of 38, of tuberculosis.
