Gifts
of the Forest:
Native
Traditions in Wood and Bark
Technical
expertise meets artistry in this exhibition of historical and
contemporary Aboriginal carving, basketry and bark work. Rich stands
of birch, oak and cedar have sustained countless generations of
Native peoples, providing shelter, food, medicine, and
transportation and inspiring a vibrant spiritual life. Gifts of
the Forest presents more than 100 wood and bark objects of artistic,
practical and spiritual value. A blend of historical and
contemporary pieces shows the continuity of artistic traditions from
prehistoric stone axes to modern basket weaving, and evokes the deep
spiritual connection between eastern Native peoples and their
environment. Carved and painted cradleboards, expertly woven
snowshoes, delicately formed baskets, bowls and spoons are just some
of the objects displayed for their timeless beauty and practicality.
This
exhibition was organised by the Mashantucket Pequot
Museum
and Research Centre in Mashantucket, Connecticut and is accompanied
by a 48-page full colour catalogue, available at the McCord Boutique.
