Quebec Silver from the Collection of the National Gallery of Canada
From June 2, 1999 to November 14, 1999

Drawn
from the National Gallery's Silver Collection, the eighty works
in this exhibition include both secular and religious pieces
produced between the late seventeenth and mid- twentieth
centuries ; and all originate in Quebec, historically renowned
for its silversmiths. Many of these works had belonged to the
remarkable collection of Henry Birks & Sons Inc, and were
donated to the National Gallery in 1979 on the centennial of the
firm's founding. Now, in celebration of their 120th anniversary,
the Montreal jewellers Henry Birks & Sons Inc. are helping
to bring the exhibition home by sponsoring it. Organized by René
Villeneuve, Assistant Curator, Early Canadian Art at the
National Gallery, the exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue
available at the Boutique. The Museum is also grateful for the
support of the Birks Family Foundation. Power Corporation
