Marks of the Mi’gmaq Nation

The
exhibition Marks of the Mi’gmaq Nation focuses on the artistry
of the Mi’gmaq people, whose territory includes parts of the
Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland, Quebec, and New England. The
exhibition highlights costume, beadwork and quillwork dating to
the turn of the century, and explores the innovative blending of
new cultural influences and traditional artistic techniques and
designs. The display includes colourful quillwork boxes,
women’s peaked caps embellished with delicate beadwork and
ribbon applique, a rare man’s dance costume, a remarkable
series of tiny splint wood baskets, and intricately crafted
quillwork chair seats.
Marks of the Mi’gmaq Nation was produced in
collaboration with the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation, Listuguj,
Quebec.
