"The Place Where We Weave"
Inuit Tapestries from Arctic Canada

November 4, 2006 to March 25, 2007

This exhibition of woven tapestries and drawings demonstrates how Inuit women in Pangnirtung on Baffin Island adapted a foreign technique to their own social and artistic needs. The ancient technique of Aubusson weaving allows trained weavers to interpret drawings by local artists into stories in wool. Out of the dialogue between two media come tapestries of immaculate craftsmanship which tell stories about Inuit culture past and present. As weaver Leesee Kakee states: "Some people might think these are just wallhangings but they are a part of us, our ancestors, our lives."
