In 1906 the financier John Pierpoint Morgan offered to underwrite the publication of a twenty-volume deluxe edition of an encyclopaedia written and illustrated by Edward S. Curtis. American president Theodore Roosevelt, who much admired Curtis's photographs, wrote the introduction to the first volume. This encyclopaedia comprises 2,200 photographs and covers some 80 peoples.
