Arthur George Racey was born in Quebec City in 1870. While studying at McGill University he discovered his talent as a cartoonist. His early political cartoons appeared in the Montreal newspapers Witness, Le Canard and Grip. Around 1901, he drew a series of caricatures entitled "The Englishman in Canada" for the Toronto-based humour magazine, The Moon.

Racey began working for the Montreal Star in 1899. In 1908, following the death of Henri Julien, he became the senior cartoonist at the paper, a position he held until his death in 1941. Several of Racey's cartoons were published in international magazines, notably in Punch, Life and Le Monde illustré.
