Cuthbert, Bostwick family fonds (P105)

Administrative History - Biographical Sketch:
The Cuthbert family was made up of several well-known and influential persons such as: James Cuthbert ([1719]-1798) officer, merchant, justice of the peace, member of the legislature and seigneur. On 7 March 1765 James purchased the seigneury of Berthier and between 1770 and 1781 the seigneuries of Lanoraie and d'Autray, Du Sablé and Maskinongé. At Berthier he built a manor house as well as St. Andrew's Church. He married Catherine Cairns ([1745]-1785) in 1766 and the couple had three boys and seven girls. James Cuthbert (1769-1849), son of James, soldier, seigneur, member of the Assembly for Warwick County, member and president of the Special Council and militiaman. He married Marie Louise Ambable Cairns and they had four sons and two daughters. Catherine Betsy Isabella Cuthbert (1770-1806), daughter of James Cuthbert and Catherine Cairns, married John Antrobus (1756-1820), and they had Edmund William Romer Antrobus (1795-1852). Georgina Davida Cuthbert ([1773]-1816), another daughter of James Cuthbert and Catherine Cairns, married Georges Louis Victor Forneret and they had eight boys and one girl. Ross Cuthbert (1776-1861), co-seigneur, lawyer, judge in Court of the Sessions of the Peace, politician and pamphleteer, married Emily Rush (?-1850) and they had one boy and three girls. Georgiana Cuthbert (1803-18??), daughter of Ross Cuthbert and Emily Rush, married Augustus David Bostwick; they had two boys and three girls.
Scope and Content:
The fonds of the Cuthbert, Bostwick family deals with the legal, economic and personal activities of members of the Cuthbert and Bostwick families and seigneurial administration.
The fonds is made up of two large series: documents on the Cuthbert, Bostwick family and documents on seigneuries. The first contains legal documents, files on various subjects, correspondence, as well as printed materials and cartographical and related items. The second series consists of documents on the seigneuries of Berthier and Lanoraie and D'Autray as well as those of Du Sablé and Maskinongé. It contains not only legal, accounting and financial documents but also cartographical documents.
