Keys to History
Why isn't Mrs. Keith smiling? Good question. She is not smiling because she had to hold her pose for a long time while the light had an effect on the photographic emulsion. A variety of techniques, such as composites and painted photographs, were used to compensate for long exposure times. In the history of photography, most advances have involved reductions in exposure times.
